Have you filled out your Homestead Exemption form yet?
A residence homestead exemption removes a portion of or the total amount of a property’s value from taxation for property tax purposes. Only a homeowner's principal residence qualifies. You must file an application with the county appraisal district generally, no later than April 30th.
If you are a new homeowner, you may be eligible to lower your property's taxable value and save on property taxes.
The new homestead exemption expanded law, beginning January 1, 2022, provides property tax relief by allowing homebuyers to file for homestead exemption in the year when they purchased the property. In the previous system, new homeowners were required to wait until the following year to qualify for the exemption.
